Cloudburst
Chinooks is proud of its crossbreeding program. We have brought
fine genes into the Chinook breed and created healthy dogs
with excellent temperaments.
The
objective of the COA's Crossbreeding Program is "to improve
specific characteristics of the Chinook breed through a process
of selective crossbreeding. Those characteristics include
an increase in substance and size, maintaining the historic
tawny color, reducing Canine Hip Dysplasia and other genetic
problems and improving qualities of the head and ears. An
ability to work, as well as excellent health are also being
sought, of course maintaining excellent temperament."
CLOUDBURST'S
FIRST BREEDING
Cloudburst began with a second generation Siberian Husky cross,
WoodsRunner Crossing Alyeska. Her sire is Boreayl's Tok O'
The Town Sinook CD, whose parents are a purebred female Chinook
and a georgeous red Siberian Husky named Maverick, owned and
bred by Debbie Premus (Boryeal Chinooks). Alyeska's dam is
UKC CH ARBA A-1 CH "PR" WoodsRunner Lucille TT DNA-P, one
of the top winning conformation Chinooks when she was bred
to Tok.
Alyeska
was pick of the litter with only one non-Chinook trait: long
fur. Her coat is notsimilar to a Siberian coat and we have
wondered if it was a throw back to the Belgian Sheepdog with
whom Chinooks were crossed years ago. Alyeska has typical
Chinook markings; she's tawny with a black nose, dark ears
and the mascara and apostrophe eye markings found is so many
Chinooks.
When
she was three she was bred to Winterset Dawson, a fine purebred
Chinook with OFA Good hips and a wonderful disposition. Of
the five pups whelped, two had long fur and three look like
purebred Chinooks.
Cloudburst's
Third Generation
Only one has been bred: Cloudburst Crossing Starblaze (Songo)
[owned by Kristi Parker Celico] who has excellent hips a broad
chest and head and a superior disposition. Songo was bred
to Boreayl's Patent Pending (Chaska) in the fall of 2000.
Eight pups were whelped in late November 2000, and the pick
of the litter, ThunderCloud Crossing Karelia came back to
live at Cloudburst Chinooks.
Cloudburst's
Fourth Generation
According to the Crossbreeding Program, Karelia (and her littermates)
IF they meet the UKC Chinook standard and have OFA Good hips,
may apply for purebred Chinook status from the UKC at two
years of age. Owners will apply for single dog registration
with the United Kennel Club, submitting photos, OFA and CERF
ratings, as well as a UK.C. Northern Breed Judge's assessment
of conformation.
CLOUDBURST'S
SECOND BREEDING
When Alyeska was four she was bred to Northdown Kusko Kwim
a handsome red male with OFA Good hips. Ten pups were whelped
in October of 1999. Seven carry the long fur, and three look
like purebreds.
My
friend, Joann Blackman, was attracted to Chinooks in 1999.
She bought both females from Alyeska's second litter and asked
to become my partner in Cloudburst Chinooks. Joann owned six
other dogs (of six different breeds) when she took River and
Kyawa home.
One
female has been bred, Cloudburst Crossing Snowy River CGC
TT, who has OFA Good hips and was labeled by a UKC judge as
serious competition for any purebred (although she can not
compete against purebreds because she is only third generation).
Her mate is "PR" CH WoodsRunner Duncan CGC TT, the winner
of the Chinook Top Ten Competition at the UKC Premier in 2000.
On
May 28, 2001, River whelped seven puppies who went home with
new owners in August 2001. Several competed in puppy sweepstakes
at the National Specialty. This is the second fourth generation
litter of dogs able to apply for purebred status at two years
of age. Joann kept the pick male, Cloudburst Crossing Walden's
Quest, and the pick female, Cloudburst Crossing Monocacy.
The
second offspring that will be bred, Cloudburst Crossing Timbre,
also has OFA Good hips, is honey colored with a dark muzzle
and ears. He grew up in Maryland, but now lives in San Diego
CA.
The
Future
Cloudburst Chinooks looks forward to several litters from
ThunderCloud Karelia and at least one more litter from Cloudburst
Crossing Snowy River CGC TT. Then we will be looking towards
River's offspring, Quest and Monocacy. We are immensely proud
of the quality this line of crosses has produced.
We
will continue to breed the best Chinooks money can buy while
following the Chinook Owners Association Code of Ethics. Each
litter is designed to improve the breed by reaching for excellent
temperament and superior health while trying to eliminate
faults.
In
addition we will continue to show our dogs in obedience because
well-behaved dogs are happy dogs (no one gets angry with them)
and wonderful ambassadors for the breed. If you are interested
in our breeding program, please contact us at cloudburstchinooks@cloudburstchinooks.com
